ATTENDANCE HOTLINE ~ 1-858-486-6273

Please remember to call the attendance hotline each day your student is absent from school.

When your child has a medical appointment, please send a note to the office.  This will be documented as an excused absence.  If a child has a fever, they must not return to school until they have been fever free for a 24-hour period.
Office Hours: 7:30-4:00

ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES

Regular attendance is critical for student success. State law requires that pupil attendance be verified. Please call the Attendance Line at (858) 486-6273 when your child is absent. If the school is not notified by 9:00 a.m., we will call you at home or work for verification. Unverified absences are considered truant. We ask that ALL medical appointments be after school. If that is not possible, please bring a doctor’s note for this to be considered an excused tardy.

Because we value every minute available to students for learning, Garden Road Elementary School believes it is very important that students arrive to school on time, and attend school every day unless they are sick, have a doctor’s appointment, or are attending to a family emergency. If children are absent for any reason, their parents need to call our attendance hotline (858) 486-6273 each day the child is absent. If the child went to a doctor’s appointment, it is best to bring a note from the doctor’s office for the school files.

Although this happens rarely, students who are absent without a valid excuse three times in one school year are considered truant. When this happens, a truancy letter is sent to the parents and a copy is forwarded to the Poway Unified School District Student Discipline and Attendance Office. If a formal notification is made three times, the student and his or her parents are referred to the District School Attendance Review Board (SARB) which then has the authority to refer the student to the juvenile justice system.

The purpose of this notification is to provide full disclosure about the legal responsibility all parents have to make sure their children attend school on time, every day. Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to provide your children with the finest education

OFF CAMPUS INDEPENDENT STUDY

Off Campus Independent Study is appropriate when a student is absent from school for five or more consecutive school days.  The reason for such absence is usually family vacations, funerals, religious reasons, family emergencies, and jury duty.  Because it takes lead time by the office to complete the independent documents and for the teacher to provide curriculum and materials, students requesting independent study for five or more consecutive days should notify the school attendance office five days prior to departure.  Homework will be provided for anything less than five days.

The students’s teacher will prepare an independent study contract and provide materials and assignments for the student to complete while absent.  The Off Campus Independent Study (OCIS) master agreement must be signed and dated by all parties prior to the absence.  When the student gives the teacher the work assigned in the agreement, attendance may be claimed for the student for the days of absence provided that the work is completed by the date specified in the agreement and the work is equivalent to a full minimum day of attendance claimed. Teachers will give attendance credit based on the quality of the work completed.
